A Golden Opportunity – A Rooftop Sports Hall Transforms a Schoolyard

Schillerschule Gymnasium sits in the heart of Sachsenhausen, one of Frankfurt’s most densely built neighborhoods. During earlier renovations in 2012, it quickly became clear that adding a second gymnasium on the compact school site would take away a significant portion of the schoolyard. So why not reclaim that footprint – giving students not just a gym, but also a new place to play, relax, and learn above it?

The result is a sports hall that disappears halfway into the ground and offers something entirely new on top: a rooftop you can walk on.

Ramps and staircases lead students from the yard up to a 600-square-meter rooftop terrace – a generous new area for breaks, fresh air, and movement. Rather than simply compensating for the lost yard space, the rooftop extension enhances it—turning a constraint into a vibrant, multifunctional outdoor landscape. The space offers opportunities to rest, play, move, and even learn outdoors. It can also be used as a green classroom.

Clad in golden copper shingles, the building gleams like a little treasure set within the schoolyard. An elevator ensures full accessibility for all students.

Built to Passive House standards, the new structure meets the City of Frankfurt’s high expectations for sustainable public buildings. The 100% recyclable copper cladding is durable and low-maintenance. Over time, the shimmering gold will shift toward a warm bronze, but its inviting presence will remain – a quietly striking feature in the daily life of the school.
