Bright Minds, Brighter Spaces – A Transformation at Hittfeld Secondary School

Originally built between 1971 and 1978, the Hittfeld Secondary School campus was in need of a comprehensive update. Alongside fire protection upgrades and general renovation, the school saw an opportunity to rethink its spatial organization – and bring it in line with modern teaching methods.

The original building featured wide corridors and large, underused, windowless central cores surrounded by classrooms and specialist rooms. Trapez reimagined these zones, restructuring them into subject-specific clusters.

To transform the formerly dark cores into inviting, light-filled learning areas, parts of the roof structure were opened up and fitted with large skylights. The result: bright central spaces that are now attractive communal hubs. This reorganization supports the school’s shift to a “cabinet system” of teaching, in which each cluster is dedicated to a particular subject area and can be tailored accordingly – giving each learning zone its own identity.

On the ground and lower levels, the two main circulation areas (the “school streets”) were upgraded with custom-built furniture, new flooring, and improved lighting. A meandering seating landscape now offers flexible zones for learning, gathering, and relaxing – while also bringing structure to the long corridors and making them more inviting places to spend time.

At the heart of the school, the large central forum has been thoroughly renovated. Trapez Architektur introduced a new wood floor, built-in furniture, acoustic elements, modern lighting, and a fully updated stage system. The stage was extended and can now be used in combination with the adjacent music room – creating ideal conditions for performances by the school’s theater and music programs.

All renovations were carried out in four phases while the school remained in operation.
