Landungsbrücken is one of Hamburg’s oldest subway stations. As a key transfer point connecting the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and several bus lines, it serves both as a vital transport hub and a popular destination for tourists exploring the city.

The original structure was built in 1910, based on plans by Johann Emil Schaudt. In 1923, it was expanded with a second ticket hall by Walter Puritz. After suffering heavy damage during World War II, the station was comprehensively modernized in 1959 by Fritz Trautwein, resulting in the form we know today. With its distinctive copper roof and broad pedestrian bridge, the station is now a protected historical landmark.

As part of ongoing renovation and upgrade works, Trapez Architektur undertook a near-complete renewal of the station. Great care was taken to respect the monument status of the building and to preserve its historical substance, all while coordinating construction to minimize disruption to active U-Bahn service.

The platform levels, exterior walls, and roof were entirely dismantled and rebuilt. The riveted steel beams spanning the platform were exposed and restored. During the renovation, the historic platform portal – constructed from natural stone – was carefully dismantled and later rebuilt true to the original. The 1959 copper façade was replaced with new, pre-patinated elements that faithfully maintain the station’s distinctive character.

Both ticket halls were largely stripped back, with ceilings and windows renewed and internal structures reorganized to create a clearer, more open spatial layout. The semicircular hall designed by Walter Puritz now provides barrier-free access to the elevated U-Bahn platforms via two newly integrated elevator towers. The stepped coffered ceiling and mullioned windows were also returned to their original 1923 design.
