The new office building known as the “Goldfish” stands among historic warehouses along the Kaufhauskanal in Hamburg’s Harburg inland port. This southern part of the harbor, also called “Channel Hamburg,” has grown into a thriving district for services, research, gastronomy, and high-tech companies.

Harbor basins and canals still shape the site, while the new four-story building provides space for technical, commercial, administrative, and development work in a variety of configurations. A key priority for the client was maximum flexibility. To allow partition walls to be installed within a fine 1.25-meter grid, the structural system was reduced to just ten columns per floor. Heating and cooling ceiling panels, aligned with this grid, keep walls free of radiators and other installations, further supporting flexible layouts.

The building’s shimmering, scale-like façade in matte gold gives the “Goldfish” its name. It creates a lively contrast with the neighboring historic buildings and establishes a distinctive identity within the harbor setting.
