Formed in 2009 from the merger of the former Anna-Siemsen-Hauptschule and Johannes-Keppler-Schule, the Lübeck-based “Schule an der Wakenitz” grew into a combined primary and secondary school. The consolidation of sites and later conversion into a community school created a significant need for additional space — a demand the existing 1952 buildings could not meet.

The extension design builds on the comb-like structure of the original building. Each projecting wing has been lengthened with one- to two-story additions, accommodating the missing classrooms, all-day program areas, and a new cafeteria. This strategy preserves the green outdoor spaces between the wings, while the dialogue between old masonry and new timber volumes creates a clear architectural juxtaposition.

On the north side, a single-story extension establishes a welcoming entrance. Together with the existing side building, it frames a forecourt and houses the cafeteria and music room. These spaces can be flexibly combined for larger events or used independently for daily school activities. Positioned on the street side, the cafeteria also opens toward the town, allowing for extracurricular and community use.

All extensions were realized in modular timber construction, with exterior walls made from renewable resources. This approach not only shortened the construction period but also underscored the school’s sustainable development.
