Building Community in Veddel
As part of Hamburg’s RISE urban development program, a new community center is planned for the Veddel district. Integrating the historic Immanuel Church, it will provide space for medical, social, and cultural services, while upgrades to the adjacent Immanuel Park will improve public space, sustainability, and social cohesion in the neighborhood.
Our design reinforces the church’s role as a landmark by inserting the new center as a compact volume that respects the existing ensemble. The architecture responds to its context, especially the surrounding buildings designed by renowned Hamburg architect Fritz Schumacher with their red brick façades and rounded corners. By setting the new structure slightly apart, a welcoming forecourt is created that highlights the church, increasing its visibility and accessibility. In this way, the church remains the district’s symbolic center while the new building gains its own identity.
